The relevance of media in kidney care in Nigeria

 The  media has been described as a veritable tool for improvement in kidney care in Nigeria. This was highlighted by Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, a consultant Physician and Nephrologist in Umuahia Abia State






He said this during an media interactive session held at Beatitudes Kidney Foundation, 26 Ezeogbulafor Street Umuahia on the occasion of Media training day  organised by the Kidney foundation.

He stressed that kidney disease is rampant nowadays, causes are prevalent and some of them are avoidable. However, people need to know the causes and prevent them. A large audience need to be reached out and this can be achieved using the instrumentality of the media. Facebook, twitter, blogs, web sites etc are all robust media to help disseminate the news. With several people having access to internet through handsets, it is time to explore this technology to reach the public. Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, who is also the Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, Abia State Chapter, used the opportunity to call on several non governmental agencies, individuals, politicians, and other well meaning Nigerians to provide platform for health in their program. He highlighted that herbal concotions are damaging kidneys and the populace need to be cautious on intake.

Resource person in the session include McDonald Ezeikpe, a media resource person and site Developer. He took some time to put the staff and Medical Director through several media handles including site editing, blog development, website operation, email creation and interface.

Speaking on the occasion, the resource person appreciated the insight of Dr Okwuonu, who he described as an entrepreneur and administrator with zeal to advance kidney care in Nigeria from all fronts. He stressed that online awareness creation is the ay forward in medical care
